Understanding Web Bookmarks
A web bookmark is a simple thing. It’s a favorite URL that has been saved so it can be used again in the future. Not too complicated. But somehow an idea has grown that social bookmarking sites are hard to use or difficult to navigate or just too spam-filled to be easy to find good sites. None of these things are true.
It’s very easy to register for a bookmark site. A username and password and possibly an email address are all that are needed. It’s easy to add bookmarks too. Users simply type or paste a bookmark along with tags and categories to make it easier to find them later. There are even tools to upload bookmarks in bulk from the popular web browsers .
Most bookmark services make it easy to get around their site. There are user areas for adding and editing bookmarks and managing an account. There are public areas for searching and browsing bookmarks. There may be a “most popular” or “highest ranking” or “recently added” page to help users and visitors browse.
As for spam, well, most social sites will have spam of one kind or another. That’s inevitable. But bookmark sites allow visitors to review and vote on sites submitted by other users. This makes it easier to spot spam — the sites with only one vote or rating — and many users take it upon themselves to vote out or give bad reviews to sites they see as spam. That makes it even easier for future users to quickly spot — and avoid — spam sites in favor of genuinely good videos, articles, and other bookmarks.
